Published: March 14, 2002. The public meetings to discuss the plans to demolish San Mateo High were predominantly those who favored demolition. It seemed they had no patience for anyone who wanted to save the historic school.

Published: January 18, 2002. Former firefighter, Michael Rogan was convicted of animal neglect after starving his dog. Authorities had warned him to change his behavior several times.

Published: November 14, 2001. Anthrax had been sent through the US Postal Service to government offices and fear was spreading that terrorists would continue to send chemicals through the mail as a form of terrorism. Silver winner Peninsula Press Club Awards

Published: July 22, 2002. President George W. Bush seemed to act one way in the fight against terrorism at home as opposed to terrorism in other allied countries.

Published: Date unknown. Just an opportunity to swipe fun at the President. It seemed his outlook was always rosy despite the gloomy reality.

Published: April 26, 2002. News reports were abundant about sexual misconduct amongst the catholic clergy. The pope initiated a meeting to form a policy regarding such incidents. Bronze winner Peninsula Press Club Awards

Published: March 22, 2002. In San Francisco a couple were finally convicted in the death of a neighbor. Their dogs, two Presser Canarios, attacked the young woman in the hallway of their apartment building in the Pacific Heights section of the city. Her death captured national attention.

Published: May 31, 2002. The Superintendent of The San Mateo Union High School District, Thomas Mohr issued new dress codes in light of the Brittany Spears look-a-like syndrome.

Published: July 11, 2002. It was reported that an airline pilot for America West had been seen boarding a flight while intoxicated. He was arrested before the flight departed.

Published: July 7, 2002. It became clear soon after the September 11 attacks that US Intelligence resources were not as "on top" of terrorist's activities as they should have been.

Published: July 4, 2002. Fireworks stand were still selling their wears despite several brush fires and bomb scares. Seemed ironic at the time.

Published: December 7, 2001. Editorial cartoons don't always have to be funny, They can move you. Much like a final crescendo.

Published: April 18, 2002. Burlingame Councilman, Joe Galligan seemed to always complain that people with opposing opinions from his own were bullies. It seemed to me, that it was the other way around.

Published: January 25, 2002. K-Mart announced its intentions
to file for Chapter 11 restructuring. Martha Stewart had a lucrative endorsement deal with the chain at the time.

Published: July 18, 2002. John Walker Lind, the young Marin man was still being detained as a traitor. The US Government had not yet decided exactly what to do with him other than keep him in custody.

Published: December 20, 2001. John Walker Lind, an upper middle class young man from Marin was found amongst Taliban forces during the beginning days of the Iraqi conflict. He was detained and labeled a traitor.

Published: August 1, 2002. Martha Stewart was indicted for stock fraud. She was accused of insider trading in regards to Imlpone stock she sold. It was the latest in a rash of high profile big businesses fraud cases. Gold winner Peninsula Press Club Awards

Published: March 22, 2002. The race for 19th District State Assembly was crowded, but former South San Francisco Councilman, Gene Mullin won with not much competition from Gina Papan, Dave Pine or Andrew Cassidy all of whom had more money in their war chests.

Published: December 30, 2001. It was the turn of the New Year. The previous year had seen terrorist attacks, a plummeting economy, and skyrocketing unemployment. 2002 had to be better because it seemed it couldn't get much worse.

Published: August 8, 2002. Privacy laws were being toughened locally and nationally, but banking institutions and others were not going to make it easy for the public to protect themselves. It simply was not in the institutions best interest to do so.

Unpublished. Examining Burlingame Councilman Joe Galligan's contribution list revealed that many who contributed to his campaign fund were developers, unions and other special interest groups.

Published: September 21, 2001. Inspectors for San Mateo High School District declared San Mateo High unsafe. The historic school built in 1929 was closed and immediately scheduled for demolition. A group called "Save San Mateo High" fought diligently to see if the school could be retrofitted.

Published: September 11, 2002. On the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the country wanted to heal and move forward. We knew it wouldn't be easy.

Published: October 5, 2001. The thought of another conflict involving the United States was almost too much for some. Many were against the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq from the beginning.

Published: June 27, 2002. For years Safeway has proposed a large-scale supermarket complex in Burlingame. Many opposed the plan. The Burlingame Planning Commission insisted that story poles be placed at the site to give the commission and the public an idea of the projects size. Safeway was reluctant.

Published: May 3, 2002. In the fight to save San Mateo High school from demolition, many observed that district officials would not admit that other schools of similar design had indeed been retrofitted and saved.

Published: May 9, 2002. Sweeping changes in security at airports around the country were at hand during the post 9/11 environment.

Published: November 29, 2001. For many years, SFO had been planning the building of new runways. The plan called for much bay infill and many were opposed to the plan. The runways were put on hold due to the slump in the economy. The runway plan will undoubtedly return as soon as the economy does the same.

Published: March 7, 2002. Burlingame Councilman Joe Galligan was blatant in his dislike for two of the town's planning commissioners and wanted them removed from the commission. It seemed he had already been successful in getting some others to step down from the commission.

Not published: Long time Burlingame Councilmember O'Mahony seemed to conveniently change her tune regarding term limits during her 4th run for office.

Published 2002: Local school parcel taxes seem to return on a regular basis.

Published 2001: The race for the local assembly was heated and included accusations that former Assemblyman redistricted contender Mike Nevin's home out of contention giving his daughter an upper hand for the seat.

Published: August 2, 2001. During good economic times, many executives were recruited to new positions with lavish benefits. This seemed to be the case for the local Humane Society. Ken White was recruited from Arizona with a high salary, a free house and a $900 a month car allowance.

Published: August 29, 2002. Hard economic times following the September 11 attacks forced United Airlines to file for bankruptcy protection. Many found it difficult to believe.

Published: February 14, 2002. Development issues are always controversial. Glenborough Realty seemed to be a major player on much of the development along the Peninsula.

Published: November 20, 2001. Some years there doesn't seem to be much to be grateful for.
